About Bruce Tyler

Bruce Tyler is in his second term as the First District Councilman. He won reelection to his seat in November 2008. As a Councilman, Bruce serves on the Organizational Development Committee, Finance Committee, Governmental Operations, Sister City Commission, and the Richmond Port Authority.

A native of Richmond, Bruce attended public schools and graduated from Douglas S. Freeman High School. He attended the University of Richmond, graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1975, and received a Masters in Product Design from the North Carolina State University in 1976.

In 1976, Bruce returned to Richmond and began his apprentice architectural program with several prominent architectural firms. In 1981, Bruce started the architectural firm of Tyler, Nash and Farmer. In 1984, this firmed merged with Baskervill and in 1986, Bruce was elected president. He was president of Baskervill for 17 years, and the firm grew from 25 employees to over 100 and revenues increased over four fold during this time. Currently, Bruce is a principal in Baskervill and became a LEED Accredited Professional in 2009.

Bruce has served on several non-profit organizations including: ChildSavers, The Community Foundation, Saint Gertrude High School and the Downtown YMCA Board. Currently, he serves on Citizens Advisory Council for the Interpretation and Furnishing of the Executive Mansion.

Bruce is married to the former Patronella S. Garrett and together they have two adult children. Bruce and family are members of First Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Tyler has served as a Deacon and the Moderator of the Diaconate. Prior to joining First Presbyterian Church, Bruce and his family were members of Second Presbyterian Church, where Bruce served as an Elder.
